Mastery Asymptote
The concept of “mastery asymptote” is introduced in the “Breathing That Matters: Foundation” course to describe the ongoing journey of improving a skill, rather than reaching a definitive endpoint.
Mastery Asymptote as defined here originates from the work of Daniel Pink. In his work he calls this lifelong improvement a “mastery asymptote.”
An asymptote is defined as a value that you get closer and closer to, but never quite reach. Like trying to achieve a goal that keeps moving just beyond your grasp, even as you are continually making progress.
The Breathing that Matters: Foundation course illustrates this with above graphs showing that the path of mastering a craft, such as breathing, is an ongoing journey over time. This path will inevitably include both high points and low points. These daily or momentary fluctuations are just “glimpses in time,” and the overall trajectory is one of continuous progress.
In the context of the “Breathing That Matters: Foundation” course, true “mastery” of breathing is not a finish line; it’s an ongoing journey that never really ends. You get to master your craft of breathing for your resilience for the rest of your life. (More About Belly Breathing)
The course emphasizes that there is value in mastering the basics, and that achieving lasting change with breathing can take up to two years, but can then last a lifetime. This aligns with the idea of consistent, deliberate practice leading to gradual, asymptotic improvement.Â
The mastery asymptote encourages a balanced perspective on skill development, acknowledging that there will be ups and downs and consistent effort leads to continuous, albeit never-ending, improvement in vital areas like breathing and resilience.
